Making the Monday Summit

Mondays can seem like a virtual Everest, especially dealing with weekday ADMIN tasks after a weekend FULL of comedy. But I know now that every week, every ascent, requires me to start at a basecamp, with a plan: I make a list, I gather supplies, I motivate my team and I start climbing.

But stress and anxiety about Mondays and “the climb” can cause people to be unprepared and act irrationally. Everyone wants to be the first to make the summit but not at the risk of life (or the company). Take educated risks, sure, kick into high gear (#Hustle), but watch out for the elements AND yourself. Mondays are just one day of the week, in one week of a year in the lifetime of our work.

Our long term goals (making it to the top) should give us some perspective.

I’m in this for the long haul — #DSI4life

Multi-tasking is my JAM

Over the past couple months I’ve been working on (READ: juggling) more jobs than normal, even for me. It’s been super-stressful and exhilarating at the same time. Why exhilarating? Because I love productivity. More than sleep. More than coffee. More than steak. I’m able to enjoy coffee to motivate me; I’m able to enjoy steak when I want to reward myself, but then when do I sleep? AHHHHH!

It seems like every project I complete has overlapped with something else since May. New shows at the theater, Summer Camps, Corporate Workshops, and Festivals have turned into Festivals have turned into Festivals have turned into me working on the daily operations of multiple theaters. The overlap keeps me on my toes, and NEVER bored. But during times when I am busier than ever before why have I started to take on new projects with even more responsibility? Why? Because I AM addicted.

Multi-tasking is my JAM!

I couldn’t do one job. My brain requires momentum, with a Healthy mix of ADD and OCD. I need to get distracted by another task before I BURN the thing I’m working on. I (normally) want everything to be perfect so if I had one thing to focus on I would burn it out. Now I say normally because over the last few years (The Awakening of Late 2006) I’ve realized the potential of releasing my work into the world early and often. Crowd-sourcing anybody? I’ve started to let people help me complete the things that I start, but not burden them with the work, INVITE THEM into the process. And then, I start something else. YAY!

I just read an article on The Huffington Post by Russell Brand about Multi-goals versus Multi-tasking. It dealt with people who say they are multi-tasking but who are really set up to FAIL all the tasks they take on. Why? Because they are actually Half-tasking – I agree. But I feel like most people are working towards ONE GOAL that, in order to be fully realized, requires a series of DIFFERENT intermediate goals. And for me, I want to fast-track that ONE GOAL by working on the intermediate ones at the SAME TIME.

How about you?

multi-tasking

Do you feel like that guy sometimes? Are all those post-it notes a good thing or bad?

I would like it.

But then, I’m working for myself. And I love productivity.

I think that even “EMPLOYED” people can and should consider “working for themselves” EVEN at their current job. But I know a lot of people that just clock-in at work, get online and “multi-task” 8 hours a day.

(Lazy people are out there. Be careful. You could be right next to one.)

Awesome.
