BRICK, Thankful for Chances

Arowana Fish, the most powerful fish used in feng shui. In Chinese, the Arowana is called Kam Lung Yue which means Golden Dragon Fish. It has large shiny scales that resemble the powerful and mythical dragon, normally seen sitting on a bed of coins. It symbolizes prosperity, wealth, strength and power.

BRICK gave me that fish when I directed BRICK: Further North (Read the only BRICK link left)

That fish has been on my desk for the last 8 years.

My first job directing sketch comedy in Chicago gave me an opportunity to work with Cayne Collier, Tim Mason, Marion Oberle and Megan Kellie — 4 amazingly talented performers and comedy writers, and Jen Taylor — one of the most dedicated and talented Technical Directors I know. I took the opportunity to direct BRICK without any real payment and worked full time for weeks; I just wanted to prove that I could do it.

I am thankful that an ensemble of veteran performers that I myself looked up to took a chance on a new director. After that show I have taken every opportunity that comes my way, I’ve been grateful for the work, and I always thank the fish on my desk for the new (Now mostly PAID) chances to prove myself.

BRICK took a chance that I did not take for granted.

St Patrick’s Day Late

irish

May you live a long life
Full of gladness and health,
With a pocket full of gold
As the least of your wealth.
May the dreams you hold dearest,
Be those which come true,
The kindness you spread,
Keep returning to you.

Help other people realize THEIR dreams and watch EVERY Irish Blessing come true.

Is it the luck of the Irish? Maybe. Or my grandfather, George Cunningham (1926—2007), watching out for all of us. I wouldn’t put it past him. Always working. Ahh, George. Happy St Patrick’s Day, Sir.

Love, Zach

Luck + Work Ethic

I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

— Thomas Jefferson

Yeah, I agree. I actually can’t deal with most people who are “unlucky” — I am more sympathetic for people out there hustling, working harder, looking FOR luck, trying to set themselves up to succeed so that when luck decides to shine down on them they are prepared and ready to capitalize on the brief moment of pause, the split second sometimes, that chance gives us to respond. If you’re not ready when chance comes knocking, luck keeps moving, and effortlessly skips out of our reach to check on the next person.

I am still VERY lucky to have a comedy festival celebrating its 10th Anniversary next month.

But the luck which allowed us to grow the NC Comedy Arts Festival beyond my wildest dreams only heightened the REAL effort and hard work of a dedicated and super-supportive staff and company.

Back to work.
